Higgins Middle School believes that "Readers are Leaders!"
Research backs up that independent reading is the biggest factor to predict student success in school.
In order to reward our readers, each week that a scholar reads a book independently on his/her reading level, takes an A.R. test on the book, and scores 80% or above, they are entered into a drawing to go to Applebees for lunch. Two students from each grade are pulled for this fun reward.
In addition, this year we've added a new twist. Come by Higgins and check out our new board, "Caught Using Their Superpowers." Teachers can put scholars on the board for anything that exemplifies leadership - academics, good manners, kindness, etc. We pull one student from each grade who have "made the board" to join us for our lunch, thus making it a "Readers and Leaders" lunch.
We would like to thank our parents who monitor reading homework and Applebees for always making us so welcome!
