Child Find
CHILD FIND
The McComb School District participates in an ongoing, year-round process to identify, locate and evaluate children from birth to age twenty-one who reside in the McComb School District, are suspected of having health impairments, physical, mental, communicative and/or emotional disability and may be in need of special education and related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). All referrals may be sent to the Director of Special Services (Ms. Carter) and the Case Manager (Ms. Herrin) who serves as the Child Find Coordinator for McComb School District. All requests, written or verbal, can be made by a parent, teacher, Teacher Support Team (TST), or public agency and given to the Child Find Coordinator as notice that there is a child, within the range birth to twenty-one years of age, suspected of having a disability who may require special/related services.
The Child Find Coordinator must ensure that requests for a comprehensive evaluation along with the assembly and decisions of a Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) to such requests are documented and a response to the requests is provided within fourteen (14) calendar days, including requests made when school is not in session.
In all cases, documentation of the determination of the MET will be provided to the parent. In cases where the need for a comprehensive evaluation is substantiated, it is the responsibility of the Child Find Coordinator to ensure that the Referral-to-Placement process is properly documented and followed from start to completion.
If you know of any individuals who need to be referred for Child Find, please contact Ms. Herrin at [email protected] or 601-684-4661, ext. 1127.
