Accreditation District Letter

November 7, 2011

Dear Students, Parents, Community Members, and Educators:

For many decades the schools in the McComb School District participated in a school improvement / accreditation review through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). The process was a school by school accrediting system with different schools participating in a 5-year review cycle during different years. In 2006 district and school level leadership elected to pursue a newly offered district-wide approach. AdvancED Accreditation became the umbrella organization for SACS CASI with a school improvement focus on advancing excellence in education worldwide. McComb School District was one of the first districts in the state to receive accreditation from this organization in February of 2007. During the week of February 19-23, 2012, the district is scheduled for a five year review process.

AdvancED accreditation is important for two reasons—(1) the McComb School District will be measured against the highest global educational standards of excellence possible and (2) the parents, students and community will see the commitment of the McComb School District to high academic achievement and accountability.

Since 2007 our administrators, principals, teachers and support staff have been engaged in a comprehensive school improvement process. Consequently, more students are achieving at higher levels of performance on Mississippi’s most difficult and rigorous assessment system ever developed. Our students surpassed the state mean this past year in Algebra I which has long been a measure of academic success. Our schools have met sustainable growth goals—the McComb School District has moved from an “at risk of failing” label in 2009 to a “successful” label for this school year. However, the demands of the 21st Century require that we continue to seek ways to improve teaching and learning for the young people of McComb.

As we embrace this process of educational transformation, we must remember that school improvement is not just the responsibility of a few people such as the principal or the school improvement team. We must all be actively involved and committed to excellence in each and every classroom throughout our district. If we are truly committed to our vision of preparing our young people for the challenges of the 21st Century, we must each be a contributing, innovative member of the team. Tom Friedman, in his most recent book, That Used To Be Us, maintains that the quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of the teachers and principals. The only way to improve outcomes is to improve instruction.

Because of the hard work and dedication of the teachers, support staff, and principals throughout the McComb School District, we are poised to move the young people of our district to higher levels of academic attainment. I thank you for your past successes and ask that you remain unwavering in your pursuit of educational excellence for each young person under your watch.

The AdvancED school improvement cycle offers us global resources to support the hard work of our teachers, support staff, and principals throughout our district. Whether you are a student, parent, community member, or educator, I invite you to be an active member of the McComb School District’s Continuous Improvement Process.

Sincerely,

Therese Palmertree
